How teens get a driver's license in Virginia

Virginia uses a step-by-step licensing process for drivers under 18. Here is what the Virginia DMV requires and where Royal Driving School fits in.

Step 1: Get your learner's permit

Pass the DMV knowledge exam to get your Virginia learner's permit. You must hold the permit for at least nine months before you can get your license. Our free practice test on this website helps you prepare for the knowledge exam.

Step 2: Complete driver education

Virginia requires a state-approved driver education program: 36 classroom periods of 50 minutes, plus 14 in-car periods of 50 minutes. The in-car part is 7 driving periods and 7 observation periods, and it includes your final road skills test.

Step 3: Practice with a parent

A parent or guardian must certify at least 45 hours of supervised driving practice, with 15 of those hours after sunset.

Step 4: Our teen behind-the-wheel course ($350)

Royal Driving School teaches the 14 in-car periods one-on-one. Your instructor picks your teen up from home or school, drives on real Northern Virginia roads and highways, and gives the final road skills test, so your teen does not take the road test at the DMV.

How adults get a driver's license in Virginia

If you are 18 or older and have never held a driver's license, the Virginia DMV gives you two ways to get licensed.

Option 1: Adult waiver course with a driving school (fastest)

Pass the DMV knowledge exam to get your learner's permit, then complete a driver education program with a DMV-licensed school like Royal Driving School. This waives the 60-day permit waiting period and the DMV road skills test. Our Adult Waiver License Course is 6 hours behind the wheel for $400, or 10 hours for beginners for $699. You also need driver education ($140 online) unless you passed driver's ed in high school.

Option 2: Hold your permit for 60 days and take the DMV road test

You can also hold your learner's permit for at least 60 days, practice with a licensed driver, complete the DMV Behind-the-Wheel Checklist and take the road test at the DMV. Many adults take our 1-on-1 driving lessons to prepare for this test.

Get ready for your learner's permit test

Before you can drive with us, you need a Virginia learner's permit, which means passing the DMV knowledge exam on road signs and traffic rules. Our free Virginia DMV practice test on this website is built in the same format as the real exam, with questions drawn from a bank of more than 150. Take it as many times as you like until you pass every time, then book your DMV appointment with confidence. When you have your permit, register for your behind-the-wheel course and we will pick you up for your first lesson.

Learn to drive on real Northern Virginia roads

Driving in Northern Virginia is busier than in most of the state, so we train you on the roads you will actually use.

Highways and merging

When you are ready, we practice merging and lane changes on highways such as I-495, I-66 and I-395, and on busy roads like Little River Turnpike and Route 50.

Busy intersections and turns

You learn protected and unprotected left turns, right on red, and how to handle multi-lane intersections calmly.

Neighborhoods, school zones and parking lots

We practice school zones, residential streets and crowded shopping center parking lots, including backing into and pulling out of spaces safely.

Night and rain driving

Teens need 15 hours of practice after sunset, so we explain how to drive safely in the dark and in bad weather.

What to expect at your first driving lesson

Your first lesson is about getting comfortable. Your instructor picks you up, checks your learner's permit and explains the car before you start.

Getting to know the car

You adjust the seat and mirrors, learn the controls and practice smooth starts and stops in a quiet area.

Building skills step by step

Once you feel ready, you practice turns, lane changes, intersections and parking. Highway driving comes later, when you are confident.

What to bring

Bring your valid Virginia learner's permit, glasses or contacts if you need them, and comfortable shoes.

Driving lessons for nervous drivers

Many of our students are anxious behind the wheel, including adults who are learning to drive later in life. Our instructors never yell. Every lesson is one-on-one, so you can ask questions and go at your own pace. We start where you feel safe and add busier roads only when you are ready. Many of our 5-star reviews come from students who started with zero experience and finished with their license.

How we help anxious drivers

Before each lesson, your instructor explains the plan so there are no surprises. We practice one new skill at a time, repeat it until it feels easy, and give honest, friendly feedback after every drive. If you need a break, we take one. Our goal is not just a license, but a driver who feels safe and confident on the road.

A guide for parents of teen drivers

Parents play a big part in the Virginia licensing process. You certify your teen's 45 hours of practice, including 15 hours after sunset, so the time you spend in the passenger seat matters.

Start in quiet places

Begin in an empty parking lot or a quiet neighborhood, then move to busier streets as your teen gains confidence.

Practice a little often

Short, regular drives build skills faster than one long drive each week. Keep a simple log of dates and hours as you go.

Stay calm and give clear directions

Give instructions early and in plain words, such as “at the next light, turn left.” A calm passenger helps a new driver stay calm.

Let us handle the in-car course

Our teen behind-the-wheel course covers the 14 required in-car periods with free pick-up from home or school, so you do not need to change your work schedule.

Tips to pass the Virginia road test

Whether you test with us or at the DMV, these habits make the biggest difference.

Check your mirrors and blind spots

Look over your shoulder before every lane change and when pulling away from the curb. Examiners watch for this on every move.

Come to a full stop

Stop completely behind the white line at stop signs and red lights, then creep forward only if you need a better view.

Keep a safe following distance

Stay at least three seconds behind the car in front of you, and more in rain or at night.

Watch your speed in school zones

Know the posted limit and slow down in school and work zones. Driving too slowly can also cost points.

Practice parking

Practice parallel parking and backing into a space before your test. Our road test preparation lesson covers these skills.

Driver improvement and DMV re-examination courses

We also help licensed drivers and drivers who need to retake DMV tests.

Driving improvement clinic ($100, online)

Take our online driving improvement clinic to earn safe-driving points, deal with a traffic ticket and refresh your defensive driving skills.

DMV re-examination course ($150 or $350)

If you failed the DMV knowledge test three times, our 8-hour online course ($150) lets you test again. If you failed the road test three times, our 7-period road course ($350) gets you ready and back on track.

Road test preparation ($200)

A 1-hour practice lesson, then we take you to your DMV road test appointment in our car, for drivers who take the road test at the DMV.
